Every year, my mom and I clear a day for our favorite holiday tradition: cookie box baking day. We each choose four recipes, spend the day baking together, and pack up cookie boxes for friends and neighbors!

This year, I’m sharing everything with you, from the boxes we love to use, to all our recipes, plus a few budget-friendly store-bought options if you don’t have the time to bake this year.

Cookie boxes are one of my favorite gifts because they’re thoughtful, easy to share, and can be made ahead.

We usually look to Instagram and Pinterest for cookie box inspiration, and this year we’re inspired by the beautiful cookie box Kylie Shank made. We’ll add our own touch and change up a few cookies, but I love the overall look!

Below are the eight cookie recipes we’re making this year, and we’re making a few gluten-free options so everyone can enjoy something sweet.

These are the boxes, liners, and simple details I love using to make cookie boxes feel special without being complicated or expensive!

Classic Brown Pastry Boxes - I love having these on hand, especially after all the cookie boxes have been delivered.

White Parchment Paper - An easy way to line boxes, keep cookies fresh, and make everything look a little more polished.

Red, Green and Cream Silk Ribbon - We picked this ribbon for our boxes this year. Tied into a simple bow, it makes the boxes feel gift-ready and festive.

Below, I’ve listed some easy tips for packaging, storing, and dropping off cookie boxes, including how to keep cookies fresh and deliver them to friends and neighbors.

  • Let cookies cool completely before packing to prevent sogginess.

  • Group similar cookies together and keep soft cookies separate from crunchy ones.

  • Store cookie boxes in a cool, dry place. Avoid the refrigerator unless a recipe requires it.

  • If baking ahead, freeze cookies unglazed and thaw at room temperature before boxing.

  • Assemble boxes the day of or the night before delivery for best freshness.

  • Transport boxes in a sturdy bin or on a baking sheet to prevent sliding.

  • Drop off within 24 to 48 hours and include a note with flavors and allergens.

Store-bought cookies can still feel thoughtful and gift-ready. With the same boxes, parchment, and ribbon mentioned above, even budget-friendly cookies can be dressed up beautifully. Walmart and Costco both have great cookie assortments. I’d buy a platter and mix in a few other cookies in different shapes and styles.

And if you’re local to Harrisonburg, A Bowl of Good has the sweetest hand-decorated cookies.
