I just finished one of the busiest and most emotion-filled weeks I’ve had in a long time. I hope to write about it soon, but today I’m definitely feeling the aftereffects.
In the same week, both my neighbor and a sweet friend of our family were sick. Normally, I would have loved to do a little something for each of them, but I simply had no margin left. I was able to send a quick text to let them know I was thinking of them, and that I had planned to check back in with them this week.
While there are certain times when our own circumstances make it impossible to help in the ways we would like, there are other times when having a few simple supplies on hand makes it easy to put together something thoughtful for a friend who needs a little extra care.
Here are a few things I like to keep on hand:
Muffin Liners, Muffin Containers, and Canned Pumpkin
I’ve written about these pumpkin muffins for years because they are truly a staple in our house. They work well for breakfast or a snack, and they freeze beautifully. I use gluten-free flour and they are still delicious! You can also substitute applesauce for the oil. If you double the recipe and freeze some, you’ll always have something ready to share with a friend.
Freezer Soup and Rolls
Store-bought frozen soup can make such an easy meal to drop off, especially when paired with freezer rolls. Local cafés will often sell soup by the quart, or you can make your favorite homemade recipe and freeze portions ahead of time.
Frozen Cinnamon Buns
Cinnamon buns freeze well. Buy some at your favorite bakery to save for when you need them. Then, attach this cute, free printable tag.
Brownie Mix
Brownies are such an easy and cheerful treat. Add a few sprinkles and they instantly feel special. If you prefer a homemade recipe over a mix, this one is easy and delicious. I never even make the frosting because they are so good without it.
DoorDash Gift Cards
Keeping a few gift cards on hand makes it easy to encourage a friend without an extra trip to the store. You can also purchase and send them digitally by text or email. Gift cards to local restaurants are another thoughtful option.
Blank Cards and Stamps
A pack of pretty note cards can be used for so many occasions. Add a handwritten note of encouragement to a food drop-off or simply pop one in the mail. Having stamps on hand will help ensure the note will get sent in a timely manner.
Ribbon
Ribbon makes everything feel a little more special. Tying a simple bow around something homemade or store-bought adds warmth and thoughtfulness. I’m not entirely sure why, but it really does.
None of these ideas are complicated or expensive, but having them ready ahead of time, makes it so much easier to care for others when the opportunity arises. Sometimes the biggest barrier to showing up is simply not having the energy to start from scratch. A little preparation can go a long way in helping us care for people well.
Warmly,
Adina
