Mother’s Day is one of those times that can be both tender and complicated. When you have a friend who has lost a child, it can be especially heavy. If you’re like me, you want your friend to know that you are thinking of her, but you also don’t want to inadvertently cause any pain by saying or doing the wrong thing.
Over the years, I have learned that most people who are grieving appreciate when someone acknowledges their loss. A simple gesture can make a grieving mother feel remembered and seen. Here are some thoughtful ways you can show her you care.
Acknowledge Her and Her Child
Send a short text: “I’m thinking of you today and remembering [child’s name].”
Mail or drop off a handwritten note
Light a candle and let her know you’re doing it in honor of her child
Offer Tangible Care
Drop off a meal (no need to stay unless she invites you in)
Leave coffee, breakfast, or a favorite treat on the porch
Send a small bouquet—or even a plant that lasts beyond the day
Include paper goods or something practical so she doesn’t have to think about anything
Remove One Small Decision
Text: “I’m bringing dinner at 5:30—no need to respond.”
Offer to pick up groceries or run an errand
If she has other children, offer to take them for a bit so she can rest
Give Her Permission Not to Respond
Let her know there’s no pressure to reply or engage
Avoid asking open-ended questions like “What do you need?”
Instead, make gentle, specific offers
Remember Her Beyond Mother’s Day
Mark the date for future years
Check in the following week
Continue to say her child’s name in the months ahead
On a day that can feel especially heavy, small acts of care can remind a grieving mother that she is not alone.
Warmly,
Adina
